Neighborhood icon Lottie Shivers dies; and more

September 2026

As the Bulletin returns from summer hiatus, we remember several cherished neighbors lost in recent months: 101-year-old matriarch Lottchen “Lottie” Shivers, former longtime resident Natasha Zavoico Mathias (87), and Laurie Gillespie, known fondly as “L” (61). We also remember longtime resident Henri Daniels, whose gardening stewardship was honored with a new commemorative plaque placed on the Eutaw Place median by BHCA and the Prince Hall Masonic Lodge.

Bolton Hill loses another food-and-drink spot, The Brass Tap

September 2026

The Brass Tap, a popular craft beer and bar food spot on Mt. Royal Avenue, has closed for good. August 31 was its last call.

Owner Barry Lowenthal told The Bulletin that he had asked MCB Real Estate, which in 2022 purchased the Fitzgerald Apartments building on Mt. Royal Avenue where the bar has operated for nearly a decade, to reduce the rent. “We negotiated in good faith,” Lowenthal said, “but we couldn’t reach an agreement.”
