Peter Beinert to speak at Brown Memorial Church

Peter Beinert, an opinion journalist and authority on American foreign policy, Palestinian freedom and the Jewish people, will speak at Brown Memorial Presbyterian Church on Sunday, April 26 at 3 p.m., as part of the church’s Tiffany Events speaker program. It is open to all.

Understanding the Israel-Palestine dilemma has long been overwhelming for many in the American Christian community because of conflicting interests and narratives. The established boundary has been to support the actions of the Israeli government over and against the competing interests of Palestinians and others in the region. In his latest book, Being Jewish After the Destruction of Gaza: A Reckoning, Beinart urges fellow Jews to confront the moral reality of defending Israel, expressing hope that they “walk with me … beyond established boundaries.”

Beinert is the former editor of The New Republic and a fierce critic of Israel’s Netanyahu government. Once considered among Israel’s top American defenders, he will explain why his views changed and how he has navigated the process of publicly admitting he was wrong. He addresses Zionism, complicity in Palestinian oppression, and what moral reconstruction might look like through the lens of Judaism.

Brown’s lead pastor, Rev. Andrew Connors, will lead a discussion after the speech. Tickets are $20/person ($10/seniors, $5/students, $50+ for sponsors) and may be purchased at the door or online via Eventbrite. (Search in the Eventbrite App for the event title.) The 90-minute conversation will be followed by a light reception and book signing. Tiffany Events is named for the church’s collection of 11 historic Tiffany stained-glass windows.
