Memorial to be held for famed MICA professor, artist Timothy App

A memorial service for Timothy Lee App, a nationally celebrated painter and educator at MICA, will be held on Sunday, March 1 at the former Corpus Christi church in Bolton Hill, now known as The Basilica Oratory at Corpus Christi. He died on Nov. 19,  after a long battle with cancer. He was 78.

Born in Akron, OH, Mr. App was an acclaimed artist whose paintings formed the center of his creative life. His rigorous, elegantly structured works are held in private and public collections across the United States and abroad, including the Baltimore Museum of Art, The Phillips Collection in D.C., Buffalo’s AKG Art Museum, the Long Beach Museum of Art, the Akron Art Museum and many others.

Amy Eva Raehse, director of the Goya Contemporary Gallery in Hampden that represented the artist, said “Timothy App was a significant voice whose rigorous inquiry into geometric form and the metaphysics of painting shaped five decades of artistic discourse. “His disciplined, quietly luminous works invite contemplative engagement, and his integrity — as an artist, an educator, and a man — left an indelible mark on generations.”

MICA President Cecilia McCormick said App “inspired so many in his almost 30 years at the College.” He retired from MICA in 2017. App was married to and is survived by Theresa Lynch Bedoya, a former MICA administrative official whom he met on campus. He was a father and grandfather who loved his cat, Marcel. He also was a folk music fan and history buff — a Civil War re-enactor with the 3rd Maryland Volunteer Infantry and the National Regiment. A tribute by that group on Instagram shows App holding a long rifle.
