Just 9 police incidents reported in September for neighborhood

Crime was up by 18 percent in the first four weeks of September for the Baltimore Police Western District, but of 214 reported incidents only nine were in Bolton Hill, according to a Baltimore Police Department report.

For the 23 neighborhoods making up the police district, violent crime was up by 13 percent and property crime by 22 percent year-over-year. The report did not break out year-over-year data for each neighborhood. It lists 5 robberies, 2 assaults, 1 carjacking and 1 theft from a car in Bolton Hill during the four-week period.

The Western District headquarters is located at 1024 N. Mount St. Its commander is Maj. Natalie Preston.

Old bookstore will become pop-up arts center at The Fitgerald

From about now through December, local artists and cultural organizers will breathe life into the long-vacant Barnes & Noble retail space at The Fitzgerald (1201 W. Mt. Royal Ave.), offering a diverse lineup of arts-based events and activities.

The Fitzgerald Activation provides Baltimore creatives with access to space and resources—free of charge—allowing them to rehearse, perform, create, and connect with the community. Through music, dance, theater, spoken word, fashion, film, visual art, and more, artists will transform the space into a creative hub.

The project is the result of a partnership between MCB Real Estate, Midtown Baltimore and Bloom Arts Strategy. An RFP issued in the spring generated dozens of submissions from local creatives. After a selection process that included input from local arts leaders Gaia, Liz Miller and Nicholas Cohen, an initial cohort was accepted. The project is fully funded by MCB Real Estate. More information can be found at https://www.midtownbaltimore.org/fitzgerald-activation.
