“Painting reflects life, it helps me to be more aware that I am part of a diverse global community.” This is Kyoungho Isaac Kim, Bolton Hill resident and a recent graduate of the LeRoy E. Hoffberger School of Painting at the Maryland Institute of Art.
The mayor thinks Artscape downtown on Memorial Day weekend was a smashing success thanks to “visionary leadership.” Bolton Hill fans of the four-decades-old festival had a more nuanced reaction.
Imagine being in a space where you can feel the warmth of the sun, the breeze through a field, and the stillness of glaziers, all around you. This is one way to experience the art in the parlor room of Leopoldo Cuspinera Madrigal’s newly renovated workplace in Lauraville. Part gallery, part studio, part elegant home, this has been Cuspinera’s most recent project, and his paintings grace the walls and hallways of the first and second floor.
One of the things I love about Bolton Hill is having the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in our midst. The energy and creativity of our student neighbors, as well as the many opportunities to participate in MICA programs and events, add to the vitality of our neighborhood.
It is impossible to view Isabel Pardo’s work without becoming intrigued by its imagery. Working primarily with gouache on paper, Pardo’s work overwhelmingly references mythology, history, and religious iconography. With fluid lines and clear colors, Pardo paintings include images of coiled snakes, overflowing fruit bowls, vines with thorns, hands gesturing, and, in an homage to St. Lucy, eyes on a plate.
If the season is right with no leaves on the trees, you can see Babette, a kinetic sculpture by Bolton Hill resident Paul Daniel. It is an impressive combination of grace and scale, a formative piece in an urban field on the MICA campus. And, as with most of Daniel’s work, the piece goes one step further: it moves with the wind.
Lauren’s canvases are based on photographs shared with her from family and friends, and they were chosen because they resonated with her in a meaningful way. Every painting has a story, and the stories are poignant.
In what could become an annual cool-weather supplement to the summer Arts in the Parks concerts, BHCA is hosting with the Basilica Oratory at Corpus Christi church two indoor music concerts, free to the neighborhood.
