State Center Bill Passes
President of the State Center Neighborhood Alliance, John Kyle announced Friday, March 30 that the House approved HB 1286, and now all it awaits is Governor’s signature. For more than 12 years, the communities surrounding the State Center complex in central west Baltimore have worked hard to achieve a redevelopment of the complex that reflects their vision and their values.
This bill recognizes and protects the Alliance’s work by requiring any future development at the State Center site to have
- community input into the selection of a developer,
- community guidance in what kind of development occurs,
- an enforceable community benefits agreement, and
- an economic inclusion plan to benefit nearby residents and minority- and women-owned local businesses.

Apply for 2018 Green Space Grants
The deadline for Bolton Hill Garden Club greening grant applications is May 1. The club’s Green Space Grants Program funds public space greening projects within Bolton Hill.
If you walk or driving by a public green space that you’d like to make a little nicer, please consider applying for funds.
Applications are accepted via email or by mail. Don’t forget to include a “before” picture of your project and a budget. Also, please check out the Frequently Asked Questions for more information on what types of public space projects the garden club can fund.

New MRIA Representative on Midtown Benefits District Board
The community associations belonging to the Midtown Benefits District each have a representative on the board. Ashley Chertkoff was approved by the Board to take over this position and will replace Polly Duke, who is residing out of the country.
Nominations Sought for New MRIA Board Members
Alexis Mogol and Brad Firlee of the MRIA nominating committee are looking for neighbors interested in filling vacant positions on the MRIA Board. A new slate of nominees will be presented at the May MRIA meeting. Please consider getting involved.
Architectural Terracotta Symposium and Exhibition
From May 27–June 17 last spring, five national and international ceramic artists participated in a innovative Architectural Terracotta Residency Program at MICA.
With specialties ranging from ceramics to digital fabrication tools, they studied the architectural terracotta features throughout the Bolton Hill neighborhood and created work inspired by that context.
In February, the artists gathered again at MICA with a group of students, MICA faculty, and Bolton Hill neighbors to see the final pieces from their collaboration and hear more about their process.
The five artists also presented the project at the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts Conference in Pittsburgh.
The residency was made possible through the generosity of the National Endowment for the Arts along with the Mount Royal Improvement Association.
