A third graduate students’ show is scheduled to open April 25, with an ArtWalk exhibition celebrating art by MICA’s undergraduate class from May 16-19.

Residential parking permit renewal approaches

It’s nearly time to renew your residential parking permit. You should receive an email or notice in the mail early in March from the Baltimore City Parking Authority. Historically, BHCA has arranged to pick up and distribute these renewed permits on a March weekend at Brown Memorial Presbyterian Church. This year it’s two Saturdays: March 22 and 29, from 9 a.m. to noon.

The Parking Authority offered BHCA the opportunity to opt into its new virtual residential parking permit program this year. Virtual permit parking requires no physical permit or decal to be displayed on a car windshield or dashboard. Parking enforcement agents scan the vehicle’s license plate number to see if the car has a permit.

Having learned that there were significant problems with virtual visitor’s passes in Charles Village, BHCA leadership decided to remain with paper permits and passes this year. Some neighborhoods, such as Ridgely’s Delight and Riverside, have opted into the new system. If you know people in those areas, inquire about their experiences.

BHCA supports enhanced power for North Avenue development group

At the request of our state Sen. Antonio Hayes, BHCA has endorsed House Bill-0258 in the General Assembly to prioritize renovation and development along the West North Avenue corridor.

The bill by 40th District Del. Melissa Wells gives the West North Avenue Development Authority independent power to raise and spend public and private revenues without seeking further state approval. WNADA was created in 2021 under legislation sponsored by Hayes. The authority has jurisdiction along North Avenue from Coppin State University to I-83, to create a comprehensive plan for housing, economic, transportation, and neighborhood development

In a letter to the assembly, BHCA’s President Lee Tawney wrote: “I have seen West Baltimore neighborhoods suffer the impact of neglect. The Bolton Hill, Marble Hill and Madison Park neighborhoods have been divided historically and socially by the Eutaw Place Median (the “Red Line” which ran from North Avenue to Dolphin). We view our work with the West North Avenue Development Authority as helping to bridge that divide.” He urged passage of the legislation.
