Upbeat MICA president looks for closer ties to Bolton Hill

MICA President Cecelia McCormick, speaking at BHCA’s Feb. 4 meeting, said she is optimistic about the school’s growth in the aftermath of the pandemic that shut down classes, and then reduced enrollment upon re-opening. Based on the inquiries it has received so far, MICA expects an increase in enrollment next fall, she said.

She also reaffirmed her interest in a closer working relationship with the neighborhood. She ticked off four possibilities:

  • Encouraging MICA students to participate in Bolton Hill cleanup days and other greening activities.
  • Co-hosting a summer BHCA Arts in the Parks concert at MICA’s amphitheater (which was once a B&O rail station) on Mt. Royal Ave.
  • Supporting a plan by BHCA volunteers to host international students stuck on campus during the holidays to welcome them into neighborhood homes and celebrations.
  • Building neighborhood involvement into the planning of MICA’s upcoming 200th anniversary celebration, and promoting an exhibition of Bolton Hill artists on the campus.

According to the Baltimore Sun, between 2010 and 2019, fall enrollment never fell below 1,650 full-time undergraduates. In the pre-pandemic fall of 2019, MICA’s enrollment for full-time undergraduate students was 1,689. U.S. News and World Report lists their fulltime undergraduate enrollment at 1,336 with 549 graduate students. McCormick said about 39 percent of today’s graduate enrollment is international students.
